Frequently asked questions

A bit more detail
How are photo backgrounds removed?
There are two main approaches. One is the automatic method, where AI finds the person or object on its own and removes the background; the other is the manual method, where you select the area to erase yourself.
With the automatic method, you just upload an image and press a button. Somake AI Background Remover says it recognizes subjects such as people, products, animals, and vehicles and separates them from the background, and it lets you save the result as a transparent-background PNG, a white-background JPEG, or a background in a color you choose.
The main manual tools are the lasso tool (draw around the area to erase by hand) and the magic wand tool (select areas of similar color at once) described in the GOM Pic guide. It's convenient to mix them: run the automatic method first, then manually fix only the parts that are off.
If you're erasing just one photo, where should you start?
To finish quickly without signing up, start with Canva or GOM Pic. The Canva background remover page promotes free image background removal under the name "AI cutout site." However, you need to check for yourself how far the free tier goes and how much it costs.
With GOM Pic, the flow is to open a photo and then select the background to erase with the lasso or magic wand. It says you can continue with edge refinement, retouching, and compositing after erasing. If you already use an editing program like GOM Pic, you don't need to add another tool.
If the part of the photo you must keep is complex hair or a semi-transparent object, it's less tiring to run the automatic method once from the start and then touch up.
Can I remove the background from dozens of product photos at once?
Yes. Choose a tool that supports batch processing. Photoroom batch editing works by uploading many photos at once and selecting background removal; it processes them all and lets you download them together, and it says 20 photos or 2,000 are handled the same way. Somake also lists batch processing as a feature.
It also points out which photos suit it well. Items with clear outlines, such as clothing, accessories, household goods, packaged products, and shoes, tend to give good results, while products that blend into the background in a similar color are hard to erase cleanly.
Photoroom itself notes that with some tools, edges can be left rough or small parts can get cut off when processing many photos at once. Before running hundreds, test first with five or six representative photos.
What should remove.bg users do?
Choose a new tool before December 1. According to the remove.bg announcement, the background removal feature is scheduled to move to Canva, and from 9:00 a.m. Central European Time on December 1, 2026, the remove.bg website can no longer be used. It also tells you to check the revised terms on the same page.
If you already have a workflow set up, check it first. You need to confirm that things like the habit of gathering files in a folder to upload, or automations connected through the API, work the same way in the new tool.
What terms Canva will offer after the move can't be known from publicly available material. If you plan to keep using it, check the official announcement yourself.
What if the edges look off after erasing?
Right after erasing, zoom in and check the edges first. If a white fringe remains, or hair or an object's corners are chopped off, it's hard to use as is. The GOM Pic guide recommends refining the edges and doing additional editing after removing the background. The approach is to produce the automatic result, then re-select only the off parts with the lasso or magic wand.
Save according to the purpose. Saving as a transparent PNG makes it easy to place on another background later, and if you need a white background like a shop does, you can export a white-background JPEG separately.
There's also something to watch out for. remove.bg states that uploading an image or URL counts as agreeing to its terms of service. Other tools may be similar, so read the terms and privacy policy before uploading personal photos showing faces or internal company materials.
Today's steps are simple. Decide whether it's one photo or many, test with two or three photos, then check the edges and save. Pricing and free limits differ by tool and change often, so look at each official pricing page before creating an account.
