A closer look
Who is Claude a good fit for, and what can it do?
If you often summarize long texts, write structured documents, or code, this is the right star for you. It is reported to be strong at work that demands precision and consistency, and its calm tone is also cited as a reason people prefer it.
On the other hand, it is not a star for creating images or videos directly. It helps with text work such as proposals and scripts.
On our map, it is recorded in the foundation model cluster as a model family specialized in long-document understanding and coding, with support for agentic coding (coding where the AI chains multiple steps together on its own) such as Claude Code. Inside the app, Projects bundle files and instructions so work continues to the same standard even when the conversation changes. Artifacts let you create notes, code, charts, and documents in a separate window and keep refining them, Research produces reports with sources attached, and Extended thinking handles deep analysis of multi-step tasks. With connectors, you can also link apps and data sources such as Microsoft 365 and Figma.
How much can I use for free, and how much does the paid plan cost?
A sensible order is to start free and move to a paid plan when you hit the limits often. You can start right away with Free on the official web and app, but there are usage limits.
As of August 5, 2026, Pro is listed at $20/month or $200/year paid upfront, and Max starts at $100/month. The actual charge may vary depending on tax, region, and billing cycle.
The multiplier shown for Pro and Max does not mean a fixed number of questions is guaranteed. Depending on long conversations, large files, and the model and features you choose, the same number of questions can use up different amounts of usage. When you hit the limit, opening a new conversation may not clear it right away, so check the reset time shown in your account. If re-uploading the same material in every conversation is a hassle, put it in a Project, and bundling your questions into one message helps save usage.
If I subscribe, can I use the API too?
No. Web and app subscriptions and developer API usage fees are billed separately. Paying for Pro does not add API credits.
If you are a developer who wants to build Claude into your own service, you need to consider the two costs separately. Budgeting based only on the subscription fee can easily go off track.
One more thing: there is guidance that when you use Claude Code in the terminal, the Pro plan's usage limits apply as they are. If you plan to hand off a lot of coding, you may use up your limit quickly, and that is when you would consider the higher-tier Max plan. Allowed usage and features differ by plan, so compare them based on what you want to do. The Research feature also has separate limit rules, so if you use it often, it is a good idea to read the official guidance once.
What are some practical ways to use it, and how do I get started?
Writing down the purpose, reference material, and desired output format together makes the results easier to review. If you uploaded a long report, start with "First, summarize the whole thing in 5 sentences," and then narrow your questions item by item.
Here is one sentence you can copy and use. "Organize the meeting notes below into a table in the order of decisions, owner, and deadline. Leave blank anything that is not in the notes." Thanks to the last line, you can reduce the chance of the AI filling in blanks with plausible-sounding content.
Opening a new conversation on the official web or app is enough to get started. There are other apps with similar names for smartphones, so check that the developer is Anthropic. For desktop support, the official screen shows the current status most accurately. After signing up, try handing it the one task you usually find most tedious. If the free limit is enough, there is no reason to pay, and if you hit it often, that is when you can compare Pro's monthly and annual billing and mid-term cancellation terms.
When should I be careful, and how do I choose between this and other stars?
Before uploading company secrets or personal information, check the plan's data policy first. According to the official comparison table, personal Free, Pro, and Max users can opt out of having their data used for model training, while the organizational Team plan is described as not using content for training by default. The fact that the defaults differ is easy to confuse.
Real-time information is a weak point. It is reported to have limits in checking recent issues or real-time data on its own, so if freshness matters, attach the relevant material. It cannot access files or accounts that you have not uploaded or connected. Some users say that having it review a novel manuscript with mature content ran into its safety standards, but that is a personal assessment, so it is better to test it once with your own work.
If you value the texture of the writing and mostly work with long documents and coding, try Claude first. Some say ChatGPT may suit you if you want the feeling of having information organized systematically, and many users split their use by task. Pricing changes often, so open the official ChatGPT pricing page and Claude's official pricing guide on the same day to compare. You can see its category and basic information on the Claude overview page.
