A closer look
How is Duolingo Max different from regular Duolingo?
The short answer: if you're learning English through a Korean interface, check the supported courses before subscribing to Max. The Max supported-course list in Duolingo's Help Center includes French, Spanish, and others for English speakers, and English for speakers of Spanish, Japanese, and others. English for Korean speakers isn't listed.
Max is Duolingo's top paid tier. It adds generative AI speaking features to the existing Super Duolingo benefits, and the core features are Roleplay and Video Call. According to one blog analysis, it launched in March 2023 as a GPT-4-based service, and it also includes a feature that explains in words why an answer was wrong.
If basic Duolingo is an app for practicing reading, writing, listening, and speaking through short lessons, Max adds someone to talk to. It's a product that puts more weight on preparing for real conversations than on memorizing vocabulary. The information below is as of October 21, 2026.
How do you practice with Roleplay and Video Call?
Roleplay is a scenario conversation with a Duolingo character in the app. Examples in the Help Center include ordering coffee with Lin or going furniture shopping with Eddy. You can repeat everyday conversations as many times as you like: ordering, asking again, and checking prices.
Video Call lets you call the character Lily whenever you want and talk. You can find it in two places, the learning path and the Practice Hub. The biggest difference from a human teacher is that you don't need to schedule a time.
However, both run within set characters and scenarios. Practice that digs deep into a topic you choose yourself, such as an interview or a presentation, may not fit this format. As a way to build basic conversational stamina for everyday speaking, it's a good match.
Can users in Korea subscribe to Max?
Honestly, this is hard to say for certain. The MoketAI tool page notes that Max has region and course restrictions and does not appear in the in-app purchase list on the Korean App Store. In fact, the in-app purchases on the Korean App Store page show only Super Duolingo at ₩125,000. On the other hand, the same site's English conversation recommendation page marks Max as "Korean users ○", so the two conflict.
So there is only one test: does the app show a Max subscription button for your account and the course you want to learn? You can subscribe only in the iOS and Android apps, not on the web. Free learners tap "Unlock with Max" in the Practice Hub (the dumbbell icon).
Supported languages also vary. Roleplay is offered in the French, Spanish, German, Portuguese and Italian courses for English speakers, and in the English course for speakers of Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, German and French. Video Call is for learners of English, French, Spanish, Italian, German and Portuguese, and Android requires version 13 or higher.
How much does it cost, and how far can you go for free?
You can use all the core language courses for free, but with ads. With the Korean interface, eight courses are available: English, Spanish (Mexico), Chinese, Italian, French, Japanese, German and Portuguese (Brazil) (according to MoketAI).
Ad removal and unlimited hearts belong to Super Duolingo. MoketAI lists Korean pricing as ₩100,000–125,000 and the family plan as ₩129,000, and the App Store shows ₩125,000. However, the Korean price of Max is not in the material I checked this time. One blog described it as "over KRW 20,000 a month" and about KRW 3,500 per person per month for a family of six, but you should confirm the exact amount and family conditions on the app's payment screen.
App Store reviews also included complaints that after the free trial ends, energy drains quickly and plan ads appear between lessons. Keep this in mind if you plan to use the free version for a long time.
Who might find Max lacking, and what should you try first today?
MoketAI rates Duolingo as lacking in advanced conversation, writing and test prep, so you will need other tools beyond the beginner-to-intermediate level. It describes the app as suited to learners who keep up short sessions of 5–15 minutes a day. If you are already intermediate or above and want to talk at length on free topics, Max alone may feel limiting.
If you want to focus on English conversation with a Korean interface, there are alternatives to compare. The MoketAI English conversation recommendation page lists Praktika (real-life conversation with AI avatars), Teuida (story-based, made by a Korean startup), Pingo AI (speaking practice in 25+ languages), ELSA and Speak. There is no data to say which is better, so compare their free tiers yourself first. Also keep in mind that even for a course where Max isn't available, you can still use the Super Duolingo benefits.
Today's task is simple. Open your course in the Duolingo app and tap the dumbbell icon in the Practice Hub. If you see "Unlock with Max", that course is eligible for Max. If you see it, read the price and trial terms before paying; if you don't, use the free course every day for about a week and judge whether the amount of learning is enough. This article is based on official help pages and outside write-ups, not on hands-on use. Pricing and supported courses change often, so treat the app screen as the final authority.
