What is Open Interpreter?

Open Interpreter is a coding agent that lives in the terminal: open a project and type interpreter, and it reads files, edits code, and runs commands, asking first before leaving the sandbox. It provides dedicated harnesses for open models such as Kimi, Qwen, and DeepSeek, and supports multiple providers including OpenAI, Bedrock, Ollama, and LM Studio. It uses an OS-level sandbox by default on macOS, Linux, and Windows, and it is a fork of OpenAI Codex, so AGENTS.md, Skills, and MCP settings carry over as they are. A separate desktop app handles office work that spans Word, Excel, PDF, and the browser.

  • Per-model harnesses for open models (Kimi, Qwen, DeepSeek, etc.) and harness emulation
  • OS-level sandbox and approval policies
  • AGENTS.md, Skills, and MCP support (Codex fork)
  • Running multiple sessions at once (resume, fork)
  • Support for ACP-compatible editors and Codex SDK compatibility
  • Desktop app for document, spreadsheet, and browser tasks

Who uses Open Interpreter and for what

  • Developers do terminal coding work with low-cost models
  • Knowledge workers in finance, legal, operations, and research hand off work that moves information between apps and files
