What is Apple MLX?
MLX is a machine learning array framework for Apple silicon, created by Apple's machine learning research team. It provides a NumPy-like Python API as well as C++, C, and Swift APIs, and higher-level packages such as mlx.nn and mlx.optimizers can be used much like PyTorch. Operations are executed lazily and computation graphs are built dynamically, and because arrays live in shared (unified) memory, computation runs without moving data between the CPU and GPU. On macOS it is installed with pip, and there are also a CUDA backend for Linux and a CPU-only package.
- NumPy-like Python API + C++, C, and Swift APIs
- PyTorch-like mlx.nn and mlx.optimizers
- Composable function transformations such as automatic differentiation and automatic vectorization
- Lazy computation
- Dynamic computation graphs
- Multi-device support for CPU and GPU
- Unified memory model
- CUDA backend for Linux
