What is Whisper?
Whisper is an automatic speech recognition (ASR) system trained on 680,000 hours of multilingual, multitask supervised data collected from the web. It uses an encoder-decoder Transformer architecture and processes audio in 30-second chunks, performing multilingual speech recognition, speech translation into English, and language identification with a single model. It is described as having improved accuracy for accents, background noise, and technical terms. It comes in 6 model sizes (4 of which also have English-only versions) and is installed with pip. The introductory post was written in 2022.
