What is Tesseract?
Tesseract is a package containing the OCR engine library libtesseract and the command-line program tesseract. Starting with Tesseract 4, an LSTM neural network engine focused on line-level recognition was added, and the legacy engine from Tesseract 3 is still supported. It supports UTF-8 and recognizes more than 100 languages out of the box, reading images such as PNG, JPEG, and TIFF and outputting text, hOCR, PDF, TSV, ALTO, and PAGE formats. It does not include a GUI app; it was originally developed at HP, released as open source in 2005, and developed by Google from 2006 to 2017.
