What is SHAP?

SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) is a game theory-based method for explaining the output of machine learning models. It connects optimal credit allocation with local explanations using the classic Shapley values and their extensions. It is installed via PyPI or conda-forge, and uses a fast exact C++ algorithm for XGBoost, LightGBM, CatBoost, scikit-learn, and pyspark tree models. Waterfall, force plots, and others visualize how much each feature pushed a prediction up or down.

  • Explains the output of any machine learning model
  • Fast exact algorithm for tree ensembles (C++)
  • GPU-accelerated Tree SHAP with CUDA
  • Waterfall and force plot visualizations
  • Examples for tabular, text, image, and genomic data
  • Overview document explaining fairness metrics
