What is ColBERT?
ColBERT is a retrieval model based on fine-grained contextual late interaction. It encodes each passage into a token-level embedding matrix, and at search time it also embeds the query as a matrix, then finds contextually matching passages using a scalable vector-similarity operator (MaxSim). It is described as delivering higher quality than single-vector representation models while scaling efficiently to large corpora. It uses Python 3.7+, PyTorch 1.9+, and Hugging Face Transformers, can be installed with pip, and requires a GPU for training and indexing.
