What is TranslateGemma?
TranslateGemma is a collection of open translation models built on Gemma 3, available in three sizes: 4B, 12B, and 27B. It translates between 55 languages, and it is stated that the 12B model, with less than half the parameters, outperformed the Gemma 3 27B baseline model on the WMT24++ benchmark. It was supervised fine-tuned with synthetic translation data generated by Gemini models, and translation quality was refined with reinforcement learning. It retains Gemma 3's multimodal capabilities so it can also translate text within images, and it can be downloaded from Kaggle or Hugging Face and deployed on Vertex AI.
