Gyeongpo Beach, Gangneung: free parking, clean water, and a third of the old crowds
Before you go to Gyeongpo Beach: five free public car parks within 550 m, 12 of 12 water tests passed in 2025, ten years of visitor numbers, and the nearest ER and places to stay, from Korean public data.
Data as of 2026-10-12

Gyeongpo is the best-known beach on Korea's east coast: 1.8 km of sand, 80 m wide, backed by a long belt of pine trees. According to the Korea Tourism Organization, the water is about 1 to 2 metres deep with a gentle slope, which is why it is popular with families. Gyeongpodae Pavilion and Gyeongpoho Lake sit about 1.5 km inland, so most visitors pair a swim with a walk or a bike ride around the lake.
It is much quieter than it used to be
Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries figures put Gyeongpo at 5.8 to 6.4 million visitors a year from 2015 to 2018. The count fell from 5.25 million in 2019 to about 300,000 in 2020, and had climbed back to 1.77 million by 2024. That is 34% of the 2019 level. If the beach's reputation makes you expect crowds, the numbers say there is far more room on the sand than there used to be.
